(Part I) Forbidden Fruit
03:01
|
|||
in the middle of a garden where the rivers meet
grows a curious tree with roots so deep
radiating knowledge, both bitter and sweet
beckoning all to come and eat
heavy with fruit, round and ripe
a magical food with the gift of sight
and in the silence of the garden it stands alone
shrouded in fear of the unknown
after many years of searching, so far from home
here i stand beneath this tree alone
finding that the fruit is just out of reach
i try to climb but my arms are weak
a bird sings softly in the woods nearby
i follow its song to share my plight
just then the bird sings a warning meant for my ears
giving voice to all my fears
don’t be such a foolish child
don’t you know it can open your eyes
if you take a single bite?
just turn around and smile your pretty smile
your life is perfectly fine
don’t look behind at the divine

Girl
03:14
|
|||
girl
you’d better keep your mouth shut
hold your tongue
don’t say something we’ll make you regret
girl
you’d better keep the door shut
keep the door shut
the devil’s out prowling, i’ll bet
girl
you’d better keep your mind shut
this book hasn't failed us yet
girl
you know about keeping those legs shut, right?
no, don’t make me get into it
girl
you’d better keep your mouth shut
hold your tongue
just listen to what we have to say
girl
you’d better keep the door shut
shut the lights out
get on your knees and pray
girl
you’d better keep your mind shut
stay in here with us where it’s safe
girl
you’d better keep those legs shut
’til we tell you when it is okay
and it’s never okay
’til we say it’s okay
you ought to be ashamed
girl
you’d better keep your mouth shut
keep your door shut
keep your eyes shut
girl
you’d better keep your heart shut
keep your mind shut
keep ‘em shut
and cover it up
girl
you turn those questions off
you’ve said enough
now listen to us
and don’t fuss
girl
you know you’re better off
when you’re not yourself
and that’s what we want
and we get what we want
yeah, that’s what we want
better give us what we want

The River
01:22
|
|||
like a good christian daughter
i went down in the river to pray
but no matter how hard i tried
i couldn’t wash that sin away
like my mama always told me
hide your figure hide your shame
so i clung my robes about me tight
but they looked on anyway
as i waded in that river
the water rose up cold and strong
daddy pulled me deeper to his side
i could feel him twist my arm
i was swallowed by the current
and their prayers were bearing down
but no matter how hard they tried
i decided not to drown

the woman finds a field where she can lay
the uncut grass folding beneath her weight
up from the ground they grow
around and around (and around) they grow
and they sing a lullaby
and they sing a lullaby
let me cover you
cover you
rest now, in the shade of my fruit
rest well, i’ll cover you
rest well, i’ll cover you
let me cover you
cover you
rest now, in the shade of my fruit
rest well, i’ll cover you
rest well, i’ll cover you

Sweet
01:46
|
|||
you were sweet
for the summer
we were sweet
for each other
come in closer
your hand feels nice in mine
hold me tightly
you are my warm sunshine
easy
feeling
you were sweet
for the summer
oh, we were sweet
for each other
you were sweet
for the summer

What Are You Waiting For
03:48
|
|||
brown eyes, blink back, braced
i know how to feel afraid
i’ve been forced to change
all to familiar, but wait
why are you looking at me that way?
could it be true that your really listening?
what are you waiting for?
i’ve never seen this before?
addled, armed, amazed
i’m not used to feeling so safe
all of my takers take and take and take and take
but it seems you’re not playing that game
what are you waiting for? (4x)
what are you waiting for?
you’re supposed to scold me with your eyes
you’re supposed to hurt me with your silences
i’ve never seen this before
why aren’t you wearing a disguise?
why aren’t you making empty promises?
could i surrender to your kind face?
could it be true that you’re really genuine?
what are you waiting for?
you’re supposed to scold me with your eyes
you’re supposed to hurt me with your silences
i’ve never seen this before
why aren’t you wearing a disguise?
why aren’t you making empty promises?
what are your waiting for?
you’re supposed to shame and criticize
you’re supposed to blame me for all damages
what are you waiting for?
you’re supposed to scold me with your eyes
you’re supposed to hurt me with your silences

Love Song
02:52
|
|||
love, i release you
i’m through holding anything back
and i’m ready to be done waiting now
'cause it is time
here’s my place in this strong light
here’s my steady, my hold tight
my forever and always
and today is my very first day
love, love, i see you
shining through all the pain that will continue to untie
shining past all my fears
soaring over my pride
and love, i believe you
i’ll embrace every mystery, i won’t be alone
we’ll delight in the beauty of all the unknown
it is time
here’s our place in this strong light
here’s our steady our hold tight
our forever and always
and today is our very first day

from her slumber she awoke to the sound
of rushing water
she followed
the river to the place where the tree
stands in its glory
its glory
hesitant she is cautious yet close
she reaches
for the branches
and there before her eyes hangs the fruit
she hears a rumble
rising from the roots
human, have you heard your song?
woman, have you know your own love?
taking her first bite her eyes were opened
taking her first bite her eyes were opened
human, have you heard your song?
woman, have you know your own love?
human, have you heard your song?
woman, have you know your own love?
